Mitigation

Mitigation is the effort to reduce loss of life and property by lessening the impact of disasters and emergencies. A hazard mitigation plan can help communities become more sustainable and disaster-resistant by focusing efforts on the hazards, disaster-prone areas and identifying appropriate mitigation actions.

Some examples of mitigation measures a community may take are planning and zoning, floodplain protection, property acquisition and relocation, or public outreach projects.

The Haines Borough recently updated it's All Hazards Hazard Mitigation Plan.  These plans are required by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for some funding and are updated every 5 years.  The current Hazard Mitigation Plan is available at the bottom of this page.
