Preparedness

Preparing for emergencies is the first step in creating a resilient community.  This phase can include establishing response procedures, conducting training and holding exercises that simulate disaster response. The purpose of preparedness activities is to make actual disaster response more effective.

Preparedness at the local government level can guide how community leaders will respond in an emergency.  Steps that drive preparedness actions are: installing disaster warning systems, purchasing radio communications equipment, or conducting emergency response training.

You also have an important role in preparing for emergencies.  Being prepared can help reduce fear, anxiety, and the losses that can accompany disasters. It is important to discuss with your family things like:

1. How will we receive emergency alerts and warnings?

2. What is our shelter plan?

3. What is our household communication plan?

4. What should go into our emergency preparedness kit?  A great guide for your family preparedness is the American Red Cross "What Do You Need in an Emergency"
