Water and Wastewater

The Water and Wastewater Department of the Haines Borough serves about 800 residential, commercial, and industrial customers from three water sources, three treatment plants, 25 miles of underground distribution pipe, five water storage tanks, and 168 fire hydrants. A staff of one Superintendent who splits time between water and wastewater,  and one full time operator keep the the community systems operational.  

In 2021 Haines produced 84 million gallons of potable water. Our crew has worked diligently to identify and repair distribution system leaks over the past three years.   Four years ago, our system produced over 106 million gallons. By finding and fixing leaks, we have reduced demand by 21 percent. These savings result in less electricity, chemicals, maintenance, and labor, meaning less cost and greater efficiency. Reducing wasted demand also conserves our limited water resources and delays the need to develop new sources for future development. We hope to continue finding and repairing leaks and reducing wasted water over the years ahead with a goal of a 50 percent reduction from 2018 levels.

Haines has three water sources, Lily Lake (pictured above),  Piedad Springs, and Well Field. The plan is to minimize Well Field and Lily Lake water sources due to operating costs and quality water, and increase Piedad Springs as the most cost effective source of high-quality water.

With planned improvements, Piedad Springs will become our primary water source in the near future.
